The individual in this role will develop our motor technology roadmap and will work across global teams to execute defined projects against this plan. This role calls for an exceptional engineer who has a deep knowledge of motor design, simulation, prototyping, and manufacturing.
Responsibilities:
Drive idea generation and proofs of concept, research new technologies, attend conferences with constant learning to inform the motor technology roadmap.
Work with global engineering and product development teams to define impactful motor development projects that align with the Shark product roadmap and organizational budget requirements.
Execute one or more projects to defined outcomes with a team of internal experts and external technology partners.
Oversee the entire design and development effort, including electromagnetic and mechanical design, prototyping, and qualification testing.
Manage project design milestones against a defined schedule, and report progress to senior leadership on a regular basis.
Work with our Supply Chain, Quality and Manufacturing teams to explore and source materials, vendors, and components. Work with global manufacturing partners to define, continually refine, and execute against a plan for mass production.
Create detailed and robust design development plans to assess key levers and tradeoffs, making use of previous research, experiments, and/or simulation.
Review and interpret test/simulation results providing input to product improvement solutions.
Support application engineering with technical insight and out-of-the-box engineering solutions during product development phase.
Tear down, debug, and analyze motors.

Qualifications:
BS or MS (preferred) in Mechanical, Electrical, Electromagnetic or related engineering field.
5-10 years of experience in the electric motor industry including experience bringing a new design to mass production.
Deep understanding of motor design fundamentals at or below 1kW and experience working with a variety of electric motors: AC, PMDC, BLDC.
Able to recommend and apply all the necessary design tools including modeling (first principles, FEA, CFD), DFMEA, DFM, tolerance analysis.
Able to simplify complex/technical principles and clearly convey key takeaways to non-technical stakeholders.
Knowledge of entire motor "system" down to the component level, able to develop tradeoff scenarios and develop a complete motor specification.
Familiarity with prototyping techniques as it pertains to motor development.
Knowledge of motor manufacturing processes, including advanced methods required for high speed (>100 krpm) designs
Familiarity with cost drivers for electric motors to the component level.
Knowledge of electronics (analog/digital) and test equipment knowledge helpful.
Experience working with global manufacturing partners in consumer products or similar high-volume production situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in product design and development, working within cost and manufacturing limitations.
Demonstrated analytical skills, strong attention to detail, and relentless drive to identify potential problems and proactively take responsibility for their resolution.
Knowledge of motors with impeller or drive system applications.
Systems thinker who can connect the dots in a complex and evolving system during a design phase.
Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) techniques.
Flexible, enjoys switching gears, and working in an extremely fast-paced collaborative environment.
Ability to quickly adapt a project’s development targets based on dynamic product requirements.
Ability to understand motor cost drivers and optimize a design to meet cost targets.
Intermediate skills in Solidworks (CREO a bonus).
Advanced communication and presentation skills, delivering insight and takeaways, using clear graphs and charts from test data
