The Structural & Thermal-Fluids Engineering Group provides innovative multidisciplinary engineering solutions through the development of advanced mechanical and aerospace technologies for sea, ground, air, and space-based prototype systems for national security applications. Examples include the development of structural-material systems for spaceborne imaging and laser communication terminals, heat exchangers for high-flux laser and RF solid-state devices, and aerodynamic designs and multifunctional materials for UAV platforms. Engineering solutions are developed through the utilization of appropriate technologies coupled with high-fidelity models and multidisciplinary simulations, environmental and performance characterization testing, and the utilization and development of advanced materials to optimize solutions to meet ever-increasing performance, size, weight, and environmental challenges.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES The thermal-fluids engineer will be asked to carry out system-level and detailed thermal-fluids design, analysis, and testing on optical and communication systems including supporting electronics. Projects range from platform level analyses to sensor assembly to detailed components.
The candidate should have a strong background in heat transfer and fluid mechanics and be responsible for performing thermal-fluid modeling and simulations to ensure performance requirements are met including the use of CFD. The engineer will support decision making in the system architecture and thermal-fluids management, evaluate/select/procure thermal-fluids hardware, and participate in the preparation and performance of developmental and qualification testing.
Experience with heat exchangers, plumbing, cold plates, cryo-coolers, heaters, radiators, insulation, chillers, and broad knowledge of materials is desirable. Thermal environments include various orbits in space, aircraft flight profiles, missile trajectories, ground operations, and underwater environments.
A thermal engineer shall have a strong background and experience using thermal-fluids analysis and CAD software with experience using CFD modeling tools preferably Fluent.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain an active secret clearance
A Ph.D. degree with at least five years’ experience or an M.S. degree with at least eight years’ experience in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering is required
The thermal engineer will perform system-level and detailed thermal design, analysis, and testing on optical and communication systems including supporting electronics.
Responsible for developing geometry-based thermal models, applying physical and optical properties, accounting for critical mounting interfaces, application of dissipative heat loads, and executing thermal analyses to ensure safe operating temperature levels.
The engineer will support decision making in the system design architecture and overall thermal management, evaluate/select/procure thermal control hardware, and participate in the preparation and performance of developmental and qualification testing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Active secret clearance
The ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and to clearly describe results in oral presentations and written reports is desired.

Travel: Infrequent, approximately once every 4-6 months for a period of 1-2 days
