[Germany-Magdeburg] Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg - Research Assistant (PhD Candidate)
PhD Scholarships
At the Chair of Mechanical Process Engineering (http://www.mvt.ovgu.de) of Otto-von-Guericke-University in
Magdeburg, Germany, we are a group of enthusiastic researchers with intensive research activities in the
numerical modelling of multiphase flows. As part of our research on gas-particle flows, we study the complex
behaviour of the interactions of a fluid with particles, their applications, and develop novel numerical methods
to simulate such flows.
The objective of this advertised position is to study the interactions of particles and a (turbulent) fluid,
conduct a detailed analysis of these interactions and develop new numerical methods to describe these
interactions at a small scale, in order to lay the foundation for the next generation models to describe gas
particle flows. This project is part of the Transregio Collaborative Research Center (CRC/TRR 287) BULK-
REACTION: ‘Reacting and moving granular assemblies with gas flows’. This research center aims to develop a
completely new framework for modelling particle systems and processes.
The position is fully funded, with a competitive salary (salary scale 13 TV-L), for 4 years. The Research
Assistant is expected to write a PhD thesis based on this work.
Your primary responsibilities:
- Derivation of mathematical and physical models to describe the detailed interactions of fluid and particles
- Implementation and validation of such models applied to assemblies of particles within a moving fluid
- Carrying out of detailed ‘Direct Numerical Simulations’ (DNS) of gas-solid flows
- Participation in the development of our in-house simulation tools in the C programming language
- Cooperation with our collaborators and researchers within the research centre
Your profile:
- MSc degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, process engineering, aerospace engineering, applied
mathematics, physics or a related discipline
- Proven track record in working with physical problems and numerical methods
- A strong interest in computational fluid dynamics
- Coding experience in C, C++, Fortran or Python in the context of numerical modelling is highly desirable.
- Fluent command of written and spoken English is required
Please send your complete application (cover letter, curriculum vitae, references) by June 26, 2020 (date of
receipt of application) using the online application portal (application via Email will NOT be considered):
