THORNHILL
WSP is currently seeking a Senior Fire Ventilation Engineer to join our Rail Systems Engineering team, located at our Thornhill, ON office. Reporting to the Manager, this position will be responsible for taking the leadership in design, design review and management as well as technical reporting of the emergency fire ventilation system for tunnels and underground subway stations. The Senior Fire Ventilation Engineer will work collaboratively with a team of Chief Engineers and Specialists from the rail systems disciplines (e.g. Systems Engineering, Signals, Electrification Systems, Data Communications, and Project Controls), Project Managers, Systems Engineers, Signals Engineers, Analysts, and Coordinators. As a senior member of the Rail Systems Engineering team, you will be given opportunities to use your transferable skills to define processes, create execution plans, mentor the junior team members, and be the technical lead for multiple projects. You will be supported by management to develop work plans and professional skills to become a strong leader in the consulting environment.

Responsibilities

  • Mechanical engineering with an emphasis in the design, design review and technical reporting of the emergency fire ventilation system and life safety systems of subway systems including tunnels and underground stations as well as vehicular tunnels;
  • Reviewing Subway Environment Simulation (SES) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling analyses prepared by other designers and evaluation of their accuracy and adherence to the specified tunnel ventilation techniques and smoke control scenarios;
  • Preparing technical reports and recommendations on the findings of technical analyses;
  • Liaison with the client and vendors to identify the required emergency ventilation operational and maintenance requirements and transfer these requirements into the system design basis, technical specifications, and testing acceptance criteria;
  • Coordinating with other disciplines such as Traction Power, Trackwork, Signalling System, Tunnel, EEBs and SCADA;
  • Technical and engineering support to projects throughout a project’s lifecycle (i.e.design, construction, testing and commissioning, and handing over);
  • Participating in meetings with the client and positively contributing to the development of client relationships;
  • Supporting WSP business development;
  • Other duties as assigned/required.

QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related engineering discipline, preferably mechanical engineering;
    • Project Management Professional certification is an asset;
    • Registered Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers of Ontario;
    • 10-15 years of experience in a related engineering field;
    • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in subway ventilation systems, fire protection, heating, ventilation and air conditioning;
    • Experience in a Consulting Engineering environment;
    • Proven ability to work successfully in multi-disciplinary teams and across different business units;
    • Strong report writing and presentation skills for clients of all levels;
    • Strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills;
    • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of NFPA codes, NFPA 130 in particular, ASHRAE, OBC and other applicable codes, statutes and standards;
    • Sound experience in the software typically used for fire ventilation analyses and modelling SES and CFD;
    • Familiarity with Simulex is an asset;
    • Up-to-date with current mechanical engineering principles, methods and practices as applied to underground rapid transit systems and tunnels;
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
